Woman Dies During Unconfirmed Ghost Hunt

For Immediate Release: September 10th, 2009 - 9:00am EDT Around 3am on Thursday, September 10th, 2009, a young woman fell to her death from the roof at One Spadina Crescent in Toronto. This tragic death has been reported as being somehow tied in with either a "ghost tour" or a "ghost hunt".

Needless to say, we at The Torontoghosts website have been contacted several times by various media outlets as to everything from our knowledge on the site to our own "connection" to this sad event.

Torontoghosts, Ontarioghosts, ParaResearchers, and PSICAN were not directly (or indirectly to the best of our knowledge) involved in any fashion with the tragic situation so we can't offer anyone any insight into what happened or how it played out. Also, "tours" and/or "public investigations" is not something we currently offer so again, we cannot shed any light on what happened or why things happened the way they did.

Also, there's no published reports on our site(s) about One Spadina Crescent as we honestly have never received a ghost report from the site ourselves.

In fact, the only thing that could be possibly "paranormal"(?) in nature is a rumoured curse with the building... that university departments and other elements housed there have seemingly "bad luck" in the building... but again, this is rumour only. has nothing to do with ghosts, the building's roof, and is more often than not relayed to us by staff and faculty with tongue firmly in cheek.

Our groups do not and never have condoned "late night" investigations without absolute permission from the current owners, caretakers, and/or tenants of the site being looked into. This said, statistically there's no "better time" to investigate things as records and reports have shown us that there are as many people experiencing "ghostly" things in daylight hours as at night.

Since our inception in 1997, we have been strong advocates against trespassing in the "name" of ghost investigation. We staunchly believe that safety, security, and consideration of legalities are primary considerations when looking into reports of the "paranormal" and the legends therein.

Sadly. since time and memoriam, there's been people who, for a thrill or a "good scare" take it upon themselves to do foolish things... and although we do try to use facts and try to let people know there are safe ways to do things and look into ghostly legends, we (and many of our colleagues) are a small voice... and as long as the "Scooby Doo" (or even the original "Ichabod Crane") image of going to the "scary place at night to find spooky things" exists, we feel fairly helpless to prevent events like the early hours of September 10th at One Spadina Crescent... save our own efforts here.

We cannot stress enough, if you really are interested in ghosts and hauntings, there are safe and secure ways of doing things... while still getting yourself immersed in "the unknown"... which yes, can be both thrilling and exciting without breaking any laws or putting yourself into serious harms way.

The entire PSICAN family send our thoughts and prayers to the woman's friends and family...

Matthew Didier and Sue Darroch

This woman's death is regrettable.

However, I must suggest that you and your blog as well as similar websites and popular TV programs such as "Ghosthunters" are partly culpable. Why? Because you continue to promote the existence of the paranormal when no empirical evidence confirms such claims.

As much as any religious sect is to blame if a member drowns her children because they are perceived as "demons" or if a child dies because his Jehovah's Witness parents refuse a blood transfusion, you too are at least partly responsible for the circumstances that led to this woman to be in a place where she thought she might encounter spirits. Though you have never declared that the location at U of T has any history of ghosts, you do promote mystical beliefs; these are the same beliefs that led this woman to be in a location where she thought she might encounter spirits.

There are no boogeymen. Santa Claus is Dad in disguise. Fairies do not live at the bottom of the well. Ghosts do not exist.

If people like you would not contribute to the ongoing modern malaise of belief in the mystical/spiritual/paranormal, this woman might still be alive.

Hi Matthew!

These tired arguments are up there with Goth Music caused the killings at Colombine and The Beatles music fired up Charles Manson to plan the Tate/La Bianca murders... but I'll do the coup de grace on that one later...

The woman was 29. We do hope that she was capable of independent thought. We do decry trespassing and "thrill seeking" rather loudly... and have since 1997 on our sites. Feel free to check these facts on our sites through our notes and editorials.

You may also note that this blog and our website do not state that anything paranormal exists... we know there's no empirical evidence to support ghosts (yet), but people do experience things considered ghostly... and it does require "thought" and indeed more than investigation via proclamation to find out the causation. Telling these people that do experience things "It isn't real" tends to degenerate into "Oh yeah, says you!" type argument... and does nothing towards educating anyone or making any headway.

After all, if we can safely dismiss anything that evades empirical evidence or hard fact as nonsense, we're going to save a TONNE of money on cancer research, space exploration, and even micro-physics... because a lot of that is nothing but untested hypothesis with nothing concrete to prove it either.

It seems like most evangelical atheists/humanists, you believe an outright banning of things like our blog and site would be appropriate... but do you honestly believe that we, the ones that do not say anything "exists" (or does not exist) without empirical evidence (all claims DO require evidence) are responsible...

...or could we look at something like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and the concept that Ichabod Crane needed to somewhat prove his manliness by avoiding The Headless Horseman? That would be more of the I Dares Ya To See The Ghosty! then us... and you'd only be arguing and trying to stop almost two centuries of literature...

Either way, a belief system is one thing... a "thrill seeking date" combined with a macho display of "NO FEAR" is another... and NO, if you read this site, then you'd know we DO decry and denounce that... but again, that would require reading.

If you DO notice this and you DID read this and understand it, then we are probably even LESS culpable of this than Steven Spielberg, Rob Zombie, and/or Stephen Moffat.

Anyhoo, good luck in your efforts to ban Santa from children's lexicon... thousands of years of literature and belief... and whatever else you deem "bad" based of your faith of non-belief and your cult of denial without facts.

Actually, just as a thought, perhaps, just maybe... PROVE to people why things shouldn't be "believed" with something better than "because I say so" or "absence of evidence IS evidence of absence"... and perhaps, a little critical thinking and then sharing the education would go better than effective non-arguments tossed out in some odd "it's all bunk just 'cuz" style of statement.
