Please Read - Family In Desperate Need Of Help

A note from PSICAN Researcher Penny Dobson:

Hi to all.

I worked for the past two summers on a semi-remote reserve up north, 6 hours past Thunder Bay, called Mishkeegogamang. We worked on a summer camp for kids from the reserve and we got to know a lot of them very well and became very very close to them.

Within the past week, a family we knew very well had a very serious fire and lost everything. There are no fire stations in Mish, so the houses basically burn to the ground. One of our kids was severely burned and 5 others had smoke inhalation. They had to be taken all the way to Thunder Bay. The mother has recently given birth to a new baby. This is a very large family who now has nothing. I would like to at least collect some basic needs items that can be sent up on a truck with FTC Canada to the family. FTC Canada is presently trying to figure out a way to rebuild the family's home as well as send them up things that they will need such as mattresses etc...

I am not asking for much from anyone, just if you have a few extra bucks lying around, if you can send it to me. (This is just me doing this, so there will be no tax receipts given) If you have basic needs items that can be given to the family, it has to be easy for me to pick up, or if you can drop it off when I am working in Oakville. I don't want to have to drive all over Ontario hehe.

If ever you would like to donate money in the future towards the reserves up north, please contact FTC Canada.

If you would like to donate money towards this cause, please send it to me:

If you are not able to donate anything, please keep this family in your thoughts, as we know the children of the family very well. Thank you for your time.

This is the news article that was found in the Wawatay newspaper:

Teen burned in house fire

by: James Thom - Wawatay News

A Mishkeegogamang teen received second-degree burns to various parts of his body after a fire ripped through a home on the First Nation Jan. 26.

Nishnawbe Aski Police Service officers attended the scene of the blaze at the Ten Houses site of the First Nation at 5 a.m. The home was fully engulfed by the first at the time officers arrived, according to police.

Three community members entered the home to rescue a man who was trapped inside. They placed wet blankets over their heads to protect against the heat and flames.

Police said they located the male on the upper level of the residence and carried him to safety.

A mother and her five children were taken to the Health Science Center in Thunder Bay for follow-up on treatment for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

If you are here for Freaky Friday please see entry below. Thank you.
