The Sacred Shrine At Lourdes
Catholics begin celebrations marking the first appearance of the Virgin Mary to a shepherdess in 1858 at Lourdes, France. The waters of the shrine are said to have miraculous healing powers.
The shrine attracts thousands of believers each year.

I visited there many years ago and was lucky that it was at an off time in the late winter. Hardly any visitors and we were free to roam around. I found the hugh display of crutches and wheelchairs left behind quite something. We did drink the water but unfortunately it made me quite sick for an entire evening. Go figure. However, did not like the vendors and their wares along the street leading up to the shrine. Found them to have a serious lack of respect for the place.
