Each Friday we will have a look at the stories and experiences that have been related to us over the years that are amongst our personal favourites. These will include Crypto, Ghosts, Hauntings, UFO's, and other strange events that may be considered Fortean, from in around the Toronto, Canada area .... and since they are from our own personal files will likely not be found elsewhere on the web .... enjoy!

The following report was sent into us earlier this year (Oct. 2007):

"Had a strange series of elevator experiences Oct. 6-8 at the Le Royal Meridien King Edward Hotel on King Street. The hotel was practically deserted due to the long holiday weekend. On several occasions, the elevator was open and waiting at our floor, ready to take us to the lobby. We only had to call the elevator once or twice the whole weekend from our floor. On Monday morning, after going for a coffee run, I got on the elevator and noticed that my floor number was already illuminated, as if someone had pushed it for me. Very considerate, because my hands were full. The only problem was that I was the only person who got on, and no one had gotten off. On several occasions, the elevator stopped at the 2nd and 12th floors, and on two separate occasions, we absent-mindedly got off and almost tried to get into the wrong room! The best event of all was when we were leaving the hotel to check out. We pressed the elevator call button, and TWO elevators arrived and opened at the exact same moment, right across from each other.

We got on, laughing and joking about the hotel ghost. Then, both elevators stopped at the same time on the 12th floor. Very eerie to look out of one elevator at another, whose doors opened and closed at exactly the same time as ours. Especially since it was empty. As an aside, we stayed on the 16th floor, directly below the purportedly haunted, long deserted Crystal Ballroom on the 17th floor. The elevator no longer goes to the 17th floor, and while the elevator button panel still lists the 17 floor, there is no call button to press."

The witness went on to relate the following:

I've never had an experience like this, and the thing is that we really had the feeling that someone or something was having a lot of fun at our expense. It was eerie, but very interesting, fun and funny all at the same time. I forgot to mention that the front desk clerks and the bell staff assured us that there were no other reports of the elevators waiting for people or stopping at the wrong floors.

Here in Toronto the weather has been quite typical for this time of year. It is dark, dreary, and cold. If you were wondering where I have been for the past two days I have been suffering the usual November blahs, and a nasty little cold bug to boot.

Lately to beat the seasonal blues I have been doing some "Georgia Dreaming" if you will, specifically in regards to travel to Savannah. I have never visited the lovely state of Georgia before, but I have always had a hankering to go. Why Savannah you may ask? I actually have made some friends through the net with a couple of people from there, and I wouldn't mind meeting them while visiting this beautiful, warm city. There is also a Savannah Ghosts Tour, and you know I have to check that out!

Of all the actors who have ever played "romantic vampires" Bela Lugosi will always remain my favourite. Bela set the tone for the vampire in pop culture, and while imitated often no one has ever come close in my humble opinion to portraying Dracula the way he did.

I tend to shy away from conspiracy theories as a rule, but in this case I am intrigued. I will try to attend, and see what the film is offering, and perhaps review it right here on this blog afterwards. It never hurts to consider, and examine what someone has to offer in the way of information, and judge it on it on its merits or lack there of.

I often say that PEOPLE scare me far more than any of the topics we regularly discuss here. With that said I came across this rather disturbing bit of a news item while sipping my morning coffee. Here is a snippet:

CENTERTON, Ark. -- The mayor of an Arkansas town resigned on Wednesday, claiming he was abducted and brainwashed by Satan worshippers nearly three decades ago.

Centerton Mayor Ken Williams said he has been living under an assumed name for nearly 30 years. He had been mayor since 2001.

Williams told authorities he was born Don LaRose and that in the mid-1970s, he was a preacher in Indiana. He said he was abducted and brainwashed into forgetting all about his life as Don LaRose.

It was a double life he had never acknowledged, Williams said, because he didn't even realize it existed until he had recently taken a truth-serum injection.

As Williams regained his memory, he said, he realized that he had a wife and two kids but that he had decided to leave and take on a new identity to protect them.

"I had no choice. The choice was to watch my family killed before my eyes or go with these people, and I chose instead to run," Williams said.

He wouldn't explain from who he was running, saying only that he had been brainwashed.

"I had multiple shock treatments," Williams said. "It took five years to get my memory back."

Williams said he took his current identity in 1980 when he moved to Centerton. His full name -- Bruce Kent Williams -- was taken from a man who died in a car crash back in 1958, he said.

If I recall correctly it seems there was a rash of Satanic panic so to speak in the early 80's led by media such as the likes of Geraldo. What a weird accusation, I'll let you know if there is further follow-up. Like I said ...weird.....

The Soldiers' Tower is a monument to remind the university community of students and alumni who died during the First World War.

There is a long-standing tale of a ghost of a repairman who fell to his death while polishing the bells in the 1930s. His apparition has been reportedly seen near the tower and strange lights have been occasionally seen coming from the tower windows.

The Soldiers' Tower Committee informed us that this story seems unlikely since the bells, first of all, are not polished, and secondly are situated in a room, the floor of which is about one metre below the lowest bell. Metal mesh covers the windows in the room to prevent birds from flying in, and a person would not be able to fall out. Furthermore, it is possible if people have seen strange lights in the tower at night, that they could be from the interior lighting. So, the ghost story seems inconsistent with the physical layout of the tower.

The House of Mystery is a roadside attraction in Gold Hill, Oregon, located to the north west of the town of Medford. I had not heard of it until recently, but apparently it was featured long ago in an X-Files episode, and is reported to have "real" paranormal activity occurring over the years. Apparently the building was constructed in 1904 by the Old Grey Eagle Mining Company, and had been used over the years as an office, and for tool storage.

The stories surrounding the Oregon's House Of Mystery are interesting, and I would love to hear from someone who may have visited, and experienced possible paranormal phenomenon while there.

That is the question that is being posed by a very interesting article I came across in Scientific American. Here is a snippet:

The origin of life is one of the great unsolved problems of science. Nobody knows how, where or when life originated. About all that is known for certain is that microbial life had established itself on Earth by about three and a half billion years ago. In the absence of hard evidence of what came before, there is plenty of scope for disagreement.

Thirty years ago the prevailing view among biologists was that life resulted from a chemical fluke so improbable it would be unlikely to have happened twice in the observable universe. That conservative position was exemplified by Nobel Prize–winning French biologist Jacques Monod, who wrote in 1970: “Man at last knows that he is alone in the unfeeling immensity of the universe, out of which he emerged only by chance.” In recent years, however, the mood has shifted dramatically. In 1995 renowned Belgian biochemist Christian de Duve called life “a cosmic imperative” and declared “it is almost bound to arise” on any Earth-like planet. De Duve’s statement reinforced the belief among astrobiologists that the universe is teeming with life. Dubbed biological determinism by Robert Shapiro of New York University, this theory is sometimes expressed by saying that “life is written into the laws of nature.”

How can scientists determine which view is correct? The most direct way is to seek evidence for life on another planet, such as Mars. If life originated from scratch on two planets in a single solar system, it would decisively confirm the hypothesis of biological determinism. Unfortunately, it may be a long time before missions to the Red Planet are sophisticated enough to hunt for Martian life-forms and, if they indeed exist, to study such extraterrestrial biota in detail.

Pumpkinhead is a film originally released in 1989, and while some of you may disagree I think it is a classic! Sure he is no Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, but Pumpkinhead was a new movie monster for his era.

I was reading through a press release put out by Backgammon Masters earlier this week, which has some great news in it particularly if you are an online blackjack player who enjoys the Backgammon Masters.com website.

Firstly, Backgammon Masters.com is not just an online or internet blackjack website, although it has quickly gained a reputation for being a leading blackjack game provider on the net. The world’s largest aerospace agency - NASA has been forced to release files it has steadfastly refused to release; until now.
This court decision, as rendered is a milestone in the pursuit of free access to government files sequestered for over 40 years!

The Coalition for Freedom of Information (CFI) has won a landmark decision in a settlement of a law suit against NASA in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Presiding Judge Emmet G. Sullivan approved a settlement that requires NASA to comb through hundreds of documents and provide copies to the plaintiff – journalist Leslie Kean and CFi under the watchful eye of the courts. Previously, as a result of NASA’s refusal to release its records concerning the 1965 Kecksburg PA incident, CFi filed the initial suit in December of 2003 after NASA’s refusal to release these files under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.

NASA is required to declassify documents pertaining to the alleged crash site investigation which some witnesses indicate was in reality a controlled landing of an unidentified space-like craft.

John Podesta, former Chief of Staff in the Clinton White House and President of the Center of American Progress supports this action and has stated: "The time to pull the curtain back on this incident is long overdue. Leslie Kean's victory is a triumph for open government and the spirit of inquiry."

NASA is required to not only declassify relevant documents but explain redactions and to pay Kean’s court costs.

The entire incident captured the imagination of the town’s people of Kecksburg. It was described by many in Kecksburg as being a controlled landing of an unusual craft followed by a military recovery of a space-like object. The entire area was cordoned off by U.S. military personnel who investigated the site without providing an explanation about their investigations. Some witnesses reported having seen a large object being carried on a flat-bed truck – escorted by military vehicles – moving out of the town after the incident.

In this unprecedented court victory the public right to know has been upheld. This court victory also deals a significant blow to the U.S. government’s on-going silence and resistance to the release of certain records relating to unidentified flying objects following legitimate FOIA requests.

In a statement Leslie Kean indicated; “Finally, we hope to acquire the relevant documents about Kecksburg that are required by law. I look forward to working with NASA on the resolution of the terms set out by the court and to providing the public with the information it has been waiting for.”

Little is known about the type of files that will ultimately be released; whether or not the files will reveal an analysis of the object type, its composition, propulsion system if any, occupants – if any, or any of the other aspects of characteristics that are sometimes attributed to unidentified flying objects that have landed or crashed here on Earth.

I love the look of candles. I love the glow of the flame, and the light, and the shadows that candles will cast. I love the mystery, and the romance that lit candles throughout a room will invoke within those who experience them....yet I have a healthy fear of candles too...

The reason for my healthy respect I guess would be a better word than "fear" of candles is that as a teenager I once accidentally set some of my mother's drapery on fire by not be careful with a set of candles that I had lit, set too close to a window, and then left the room. No major damage was done, but the potential had been there.

This is another reason why I am happy to tell people about LED flameless candles like the ones that are found on the website I have just linked to. You get the same gorgeous look of wax candles only they are completely safe!

Have a look at these beautiful, and mood setting flameless wall sconces. I would never have a wax candle wall sconce for safety reasons, but these allow for the look I love, and match my décor perfectly. Very cool!

With the holidays almost here I am also looking at possibly purchasing flameless Christmas candles as well.

Something I have pondered for years....the similarity between reports of ghosts, and those of alien abduction. Early within his own research, John Keel believed that all these things "elementals" including aliens, poltergeists, Atlantians, ghosts, dopplegangers, etc were really just all either aliens or beings that coexisted with us on a different plane. We only interpreted them differently based on our own perceptions or if that wasn't the case, then these "elementals" could control how they appeared.

The Niagara Falls Aviary located in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada opened to the public in June 2003. The aviary features 300 tropical birds from around the world as well as an authentic wooden Java House, hand carved in Indonesia in 1875, and I highly recommend a visit!

However....the site may just be haunted!

In the early part of the 20th century on the site of the aviary was the Spirella Corset Company, which was designed to manufacture corsets, and at its height employed 250 women. It is from this era of the building's history that rumours of a ghost who haunts the aviary dressed as a night watchman that tidies up comes from.

Ghost or no ghost, it is well worth the visit!

Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada - December 28, 1996, 3:00 PM

On Saturday, December 28, 1996, at 3:00 PM, a residents of Thunder Bay, Ontario saw a silvery object in the southwestern sky, seemingly hovering over the Sibley Peninsula, a wilderness park jutting out into Lake Superior. The Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal received calls from dozens of eyewitnesses, as did Ivan Sherlock, director of the Thunder Bay chapter of MUFON. The object was visible from Hillcrest Park, Victoria Avenue, the Intercity Shopping Center on Fort William Road and the Port Arthur waterfront section of the city. Captain George Paterson of the city's Salvation Army chapter told reporter Gail Cohen of the Chronicle-Journal, "We saw something over the harbour Saturday," adding that he was originally " not a believer and thought it was a helicopter or a balloon, but the object left the area very quickly. It was definitely there, and it was interesting enough to get my attention." Three days earlier, on December 21, Lori Eaton and her husband were driving down John Street when they saw "a white light" to the southwest near the city's landfill site. "We looked up, and the white light was gone, and there were blue and green lights," she said. "I've never seen anything like it." As they drew closer, she added, the object hovered right over their car before zooming off. In November, solitary UFOs were seen in Sudbury, Ontario and Ardbeg, Ontario, just east of Lake Huron.

I was reading through a Hans Holzer book on a case that involved vintage exercise equipment that would operate seemingly by unseen exercisers?! I found this a bit synchronastic as we received a report from a gym in the Toronto area that was somewhat similar only last week. If anything pans out from this current report we will add it to the TGHRS website during one of the regularly scheduled site updates. Now why would something without a body wish to exercise do you suppose????

On Sundays we both participate in a creative writing exercise called Blog Your Blessings through our personal blogs, One Old Green Bus, and My Life In The Urban Zoo. Not only is it uplifting to write out our weekly blessings, but it is a pleasure to read through the other participants entries.

This week a friend of ours wrote about some guidance she received from the other side. This guidance literally saved her life! Have a read through the entry at Moonlight Becomes Me and please do wish her well on her road to recovery.

I was reading through a case the other day that struck me as a bit different so I though I would share it with you all. The report involved a household that was having issues with their cordless phone battery.

Most enthusiasts are familiar with the fact that investigators occasionally complain of camera batteries, and such inexplicably draining at the site of reportedly haunted activity. However, this was a first for me personally. I did make note of the fact it was another form of communication device that was apparently affected. Interesting!

I read the following news item earlier in the day, and it left me with such a sense of outrage, and then sadness.

Woman drowns during exorcism ceremony

A 22-year-old woman died during an exorcism ritual in New Zealand, drowning at a relative's home as up to 40 family members looked on, police said today.

Janet Moses, a mother of two, was held under water in an attempt to drive away a makutu, or Maori curse. Containers holding an "extensive amount" of water were brought into the lounge of the house, in Wellington, for the ceremony.

The woman had been dead for nine hours before her family contacted police. She had been placed on a bed and was found with grazes to her upper arms, forearms and torso.

Detectives initially treated the death as unexplained until a post-mortem ruled out natural causes and revealed the woman had drowned.

Detective Sergeant Ross Levy, leading the inquiry, confirmed that a "cultural ceremony" had taken place, and said police were treating the death as a homicide. The exorcism took place on October 12.

Moses, who had daughters aged one and three, stayed at her relatives house in the week leading up the ceremony. A woman living next door said she heard loud noises on the night of the exorcism, "like banging on a wall", adding that a large number of people had entered and left the building.

Detectives have now interviewed 100 members of the woman's family. "The family has always been the central focus of the inquiry ... this has not changed and won't change," Det Sgt Levy said. "Our task is to identify those responsible for Janet's death."

I have ranted about exorcism here in the past so I won't go too much farther into it other than to say how these senseless tortures, and deaths continue round the globe, and well into the 21st century is beyond me.

We have masked the hospital in this account in order to protect the past, and current staff members who have written to us, and so that current, and future patients are not made uncomfortable by their stay at this facility.

One of our readers writes:

"I was shocked to see that there was not one report regarding the former [Name Witheld] Site.

When I was in University, 8 years ago, I had worked as a security guard at the above mentioned hospital. At this time the whole place was being renovated, and at night there was only 3 of us in the entire place, 2 guards and a Kidney Dialysis tech who worked an on-line support. My duties were to do an hourly patrol, which was more like a bi-hourly patrol, which consisted of a walk through the entire facility. This was a creepy endeavor even during the day, so one can imagine what fun it would be at night.

There appears to be at least three places of activity, that I know about, the first being the basement washroom. This place seems to have toilets that flush themselves while you are in earshot, and upon inspection the door was locked with a padlock, on the outside, and when opened no one to be seen. The toilets by the way are manual flush which require someone, or something, to push down to activate.

The second place is the main lobby. At least 4 times I myself saw a shadow, from the reflection of the lobby doors which were in front of the reception desk which I was stationed. When I checked the CCTV, there was no one there, and the other guard was nowhere near the main lobby, which I determined by the CCTV cameras.

The third place is in the basement, where the doors leading to the shipping door seen to slam by themselves at irregular intervals, and always when you are walking away from the area.

It took me 4 weeks to transfer to another location, and it couldn't have happened a day to soon. To this day I still can't even drive by the place, cause I still have recurring nightmares about it. I think it would be a great place for an investigation, as long as I'm not leading it. If you find other guards who worked there they could enlighten you to probably more places, cause I heard stories from some other guys who worked there."

Question for you all? Do you believe an item can be haunted? I believe it might be possible to imprint memories or emotions onto an inanimate object possibly through some sort of psychic means.

Several years ago I read a compelling case involving a groomsmen gift that would appear, and then reappear in a house that was reportedly experiencing poltergeist activity. The strange happening appeared to be entered around this particular item, and alleviated after it was removed from the home.

Just some food for thought.....

....something else? After watching this video I'm not that sold on the ghost idea, but what do you all think? This certainly has made the rounds via the media both locally, and getting CNN coverage as well. It has also stirred some lively discussion on our paranormal message board.

..."what is the most haunted building in Toronto, or Ontario, or even all of Canada?" And, I always answer I have no idea, and that no one place on earth can make the claim to be "most haunted" anything....bad media influence I say,,,

What I can tell you is that there are a few places that generate by far more reports then others, and for the past two years it has been Humber College Lakeshore Campus.

The college campus is far better known in paranormal circles as the Former Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital. Not only did these old, historic buildings serve as a mental hospital, over the years they were used as a drug rehab, a hospice, a movie set, and a squat by area homeless.

Now they have been restored, and house classrooms etc. We often hear from area residents who have memories of the site before the college took over, staff, security, and now students. Some are just curious about the ghosts stories, and others have had experiences of their own.

Just a quick note on memberships because this time of year we tend to get a lot of added interest from people ... hint it is just after Halloween.

We do not take on any new members between September through to January this is because the past has shown us that people who show a lot of interest now, may not be as enthusiastic come Christmas. The real Bloody Mary is pictured above, and is of course Mary I of England, or Mary Tudor. She is perhaps best remembered for briefly returning England to Roman Catholicism. And for having almost three hundred religious dissenters executed, and even more tortured. For this she is often known as Bloody Mary.

Bloody Mary is not waiting to hop out of any mirrors no matter what the urban legends say, but she is apparently haunting Sawston Hall located just south of Cambridge, England. The owners of the Hall gave her refuge when her young brother the King was ailing, and there were conspiracies to have the then princess Mary killed. Through the centuries her spirit has been reported as a "grey lady" and is accompanied by virginal music of which she was considered very talented within her lifetime.
