Return of the Samcketh-Down! Hear a claim - Check a claim!

You will all be pleased to hear that all the people involved with this site now have doctorates in Parapsychology from Oxford University. We have also been knighted with The Order of the British Empire for our service to the understanding of paranormal phenomena, and several cardinals have put forward our names to be canonized by the Pope and thus become living saints.

We have gone-off around this blog on people claiming to have degrees and doctorates that they have not earned but bought... from unaccredited internet sites "selling" degrees...

...well, that's bad... but there is SOMETHING worse...

Recently, there was a large article in Toronto Life, a local magazine, where they featured a "ghost hunter" not based in Toronto, but in another part of Southern Ontario who we are familiar with.

In the article, amongst other claims, was a degree in psychology from The University of Toronto.

Though [name removed] earned a degree in psychology at U of T, he was more interested in becoming a historian and working in the media.

Well, the fellow in question uses a pseudonym, but we know his "real name" and one of our volunteers simply contacted The Undergraduate Advisor of The Department of Psychology, Sidney Smith Hall, University of Toronto - Tamara Ferguson - and asked if she could verify this person (either name) having graduated in the last thirty years or so... and the answer was that no person with either name had completed their studies according to the rolls at the University... one person with the fellow's "real" name started the courses, but never finished a single one... "All Classes Incomplete"... ALL of them! Meaning they didn't even finish one class of the FIRST semester. If you go to your local bookstore and pick up Dr. Phil's latest book and read the dust-cover, you've probably done more work than this person did towards your degree.

I suppose that this fellow COULD have a THIRD name... but then, that too would look a trifle weird to most folks...

Then again, I had to equally chuckle at the statement that I quoted from the magazine as we had this fellow on a radio show once and he claimed a "soldier's memorial statue" dating from World War I was haunted by the soldier it's modelled on... who died in the Dieppe raid... which, unbeknownest to him, happened in World War II... so much for history.

While I'm here... the second part of this post (click here)... same guy.

Look, this fellow is NOT alone... many "for profit" ghost hunters and other would-be paranormal investigators and psychics/mediums (especially ones who charge for their efforts) pass themselves off with phony credentials in the hopes you won't check into them... PLEASE DO... especially when they name where the credentials come from.

It's as easy as a phone call or an e-mail to find out if they're "fibbing"... and if they lie about that, what else might they be hiding... and what might their lies cost you?

If they do check out, how about their alma mater? Is it legit? Does their web-presence seem like a "real" institution... or do they sell diplomas for fifty-bucks? (I will attest that University of Toronto is legit... for those not in the know...)

So, I want YOU to lay the SMACKETH-DOWN on folks that do these sorts of things! Demand proof! Demand honesty! Demand evidence!

If you contact a "ghost hunter" or whatever, CHECK THEM OUT THOROUGHLY!

For the record, "our folks" (from ParaResearchers, PSICAN, and the GHRS,) go through a course and an exam and are internally qualified by us... and their names are listed on the website they work most closely with.

...and no, none of us have a degree in parapsychology from Oxford... nor an OBE (yet)... nor are we going to become saints. That was for comic license only.

Forgive me for sounding ignorant, but...

People do Ghost Hunting for PROFIT?

I guess the concept of it never occurred to me. I thought.. well, I always figured people did it for... research, a hobby, or something. Profit? *mumbles incoherently*

La Chanson -> I think the vast majority on the internet are doing it as a hobby, and some are doing research for academic purposes, but there are those who do charge fees for their services such as "house clearing" etc. Some may be ok. but it is like those "phoney psychics" you read about in the news that charge huge sums of money to remove "curses", there are many bad ones out there too. And if someone claims a degree from a University, a police background whatever, it is easy enough to check out, and it behooves the consumer to do so before they open their wallet.

I can't find your email.... This reminded me I wanted your 'expert' opinion on a recent local event here in Northwestern Pennsylvania...

The thing is.. in the two photos in question, the bottom 'figure' doesn't move... at all (it seemed). Just wondered what you're thoughts were.

I would also like to comment that our auras are neatly combed and our halos haven't slipped.
Did you know that people really do show Halos, at times? *big grin*
Not that I've seen them or anything
outrageous like that.*bigger grin*

REAL Psychics born and live through many years of working on, with and trying to understand their 'gifts'.

(Although many would stutter a bit when trying to claim they had a 'gift'. It's not always a good thing to be inundated with everyone's feelings in a crowded room of people.)

They tend to be examples and teachers... because they know how other people feel.. they work hard at helping others, BEings of service. They take this stuff very seriously and would never come off as flippant in making public statements about their calling. Aside from the true teachers in this field. I find many to be shy, introverted folks who are most happiest doing their 'work' quietly, on the side and sometimes without a lot of explanation.. mainly because of others reactions.. as to 'You did what?!?!' :):)
Our ideas of 'normal' are a little different to most people:):)

I'd like to make a few comments after reading a certain article in Toronto Life.
IMHO and understandings:

Normally a spiritual teacher. Anyone that is publicly claiming 'gifts' is in essence a teacher, in full understandings. We wouldn't call entities and spirits... ghosts.
It's not 'easy' for an entity to appear as a light that we can see in the physical. It's not easy for entities to manifest or create phenomenon in the physical. If it were so it would be commonplace.

Big or small Orbs are not a way to identify if an Orb is a flying bug, piece of dust or a manifestation of spirit. I don't think anyone has truely figured that one out yet. If you have multiple manifestations happening in one area, with consistent Orbs, then I can draw some general deductions.

'Ghost mists' to quote the term used by one. Is not a manifestation before becoming an Orb! as the article says. Then in the next paragraph the other says quote "full-form manifestations with recognizable features, are the next step up from mists" What did they say? I'm getting confused:)

Most times it's moisture in the air... and I mean that very seriously. Again it can be a calling card to say something is going on here and a place that I would generally 'check out'. The reasons for a mist or a denser area of atmosphere, spiritually speaking, has such a large range of reasons that you really have to take in the uniqueness of each case. Each 'case' remember is or was (depending on how you look at it) an embodied person or persons. Just as each person is different so is each entity/spirit.

Oh boy.. I'm glad this is a smack down...
This touches on a touchy subject:) and PSICAN under no circumstances clears homes, buildings etc.

But personally... I have, helped spirits to cross. It just one of those things that comes with the territory... and I do it for free and without vibrato :) at least in the physical world *grin*
When assisting spirits to 'the light' you never turn your back on any of them...especially if they specifically ask for help. What is so hard about envisioning the light, in your imagination and letting them draw themselves to it? (it's the ones who fight you to go that take time.)
Therein lies another paradox to think about.. do you 'force' an entity into the light that doesn't want to go or leave it be?
Soul rescue work is not draining unless you make it that way for yourself.
Also my view of a 'clearing' is not just to get the spirit or energies out of the way. It is to send them into the light. Therefore if they would return and many times they do, for a visit, they would be of a benevolent nature. After a successful 'clearing' the same negativity would not reoccur of a lessor extent.

Also, Please don't worry about mirrors facing each other, if thats your thing. I think that following a guiding principal of feng shui: no mirrors facing each other on opposite walls. This makes much more sense, because "it creates a crazy, funhouse effect with too many images resulting in confusion. It makes the room feel so busy it's sometimes difficult to get to sleep, according to feng shui followers."

I could go on but these are some main points that I wanted to address from the article.

On closing, spirits, entities and 'ghosts' are us without bodies, our energies left from previous lives, strong emotions of lives lived... by falling into the emotional response of fear. We are blocking ourselves from a great source wisdom and sometimes warnings, made in real history.
Try and have a more open approach and explore our fascinating past... and sometimes future but I won't get into that *bigger grin*

Wow! Nancy -> Thank you for your 2 cents worth. All I can say is that positive attracts positive, and negative will attract negativity. People who are honest, and sincere never have anything to be fearful of. And yes every good "psychic" imho that I have met has treated spirit with dignity. Cheers!

I do actually get paid to research the paranormal...but they're paying for the research, not the ghost. I refer individuals to PSICAN for homes and such (to be looked into free of charge) but I do make my living consulting with media and researching history as it relates to the paranormal. If there is an individual who chooses to hire me by the hour instead of get the outstanding work of my colleagues for free, well I won't turn it down...but I do suggest the free stuff first!

I also teach research method--potentially putting myself out of a job LOL But this isnt rocket science. Anyone who can stand the tedium can be a paranormal investigator...

Hey Dave... The City of Toronto is the known centre of the Universe and the only city in the Country of Canada... everything else is tundra and igloos.

Yet another example of the press printing any old rubbish without checking the facts.

I am angry because my wife worked hard to earn her Doctorate in Psychology.

David -> I agree, when some claims to have earned something that they did not it is an insult to all those who worked very hard to achieve it.

Chris -> Glad you enjoyed it.

Just surfing the site and I have a question for Robin, if you don't mind answering it.

As someone with a real Master's degree in Health Sciences from an accredited Canadian university and someone who conducted scientific research, did design a study, collect the data, analyze the results etc. for partial fullfillment of her degree I'm curious what peer reviewed journals research, experimental studies would be submitted to?

I mean no disrespect, believe me I am well aware of the existence of paranormal phenomenon, I am just curious if it would be psychology, religous studies??

Jacqueline -> The interesting part of this study is that it would have to encompass a multi-discipline peer review of both hard, and soft science, and possibly even religious study depending on the witness perceptions. We sincerely hope that one day the academic world will take a more serious look at these studies hopefully if we try to institute peer review ourselves within our field as it stands eventually they will see the value of these topics. Thanks so much for your comment :)
