Paranormal Phenomena Do Occur

Exciting news from Glasgow University, which will begin offering courses on ghosts, and hauntings this Fall. A refreshing step forward in the legitimacy of this topic as a valid, and relevant field of study that is unfortunately rife with charlatans, and wishful thinkers. Read on:

High spirits on campus are more usually associated with student union bars than lecture halls, but one of Scotland's oldest seats of learning is offering classes studying spooks, poltergeists and demonic possession.

Glasgow University will start running a course in psychical research next month, which aims to show that supernatural phenomena do occur.

The paranormal study group is the brainchild of veteran academic Professor Archie Roy, 84, whose pre-eminence in the field of astronomy has seen an asteroid named after him.

It is good that some universities encourage free thinking, allowing people to pursue interesting subjects.

It is bad that so much science funding is controlled.

I think it's wonderful too - it's something I plan to teach the history of someday at a university, and courses such as this help pave the way.

I am all for balanced press coverage, but I really felt this article was a bit too slanted towards Alistair McBay and his so-called "secular" agenda. Spreading superstitions? Is McBay from the sixteenth century? He completely misses the point of this course, and no one takes him to task for that. They should have given Archie Roy a chance to respond directly to close the article.

The more I learn of "secular" agendas, the more narrow-minded they seem to be. Secularization is invaluable in separating church and state, however educational institutions are made to be open places of learning - of all sorts of points of view. People should be allowed to openly discuss all sorts of topics at a university, including religion, atheism, spiritual beliefs and exploring what we do not know. McBay's remarks are completely off the mark, and the Scotsman reporter should have been more on the ball in getting response to his remarks if they were to tackle that angle.
