Kangahippomous - Skinny Pig

The photo above has been making the rounds across the internet. Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman had this to say about it:

Quote:

My first thoughts ran to that of the naked mole rat (Heterocephalus glaber), also called the desert mole rat or the sand puppy, but they are only found in East Africa, naturally. Naked mole-rats live in underground dwellings in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya. Why worry about al Qaeda, when the naked mole rat may be coming into our country?

BoingBoing states this photo was taken in Washington State, just outside Seattle.

One of our own regular readers Jim points out that it is most likely a Skinny Pig or Hairless Guinea Pig that was probably someone's pet that they released. It probably won't last long in the wild.

Here is the Wiki entry on Skinny Pigs including photos.

We agree with Jim's assessment.

The ears aren't large enough to belong to a hairless guinea pig. I've owned one. Even when compared to the pig pics on Wiki, you can see the ears are much smaller on this animal. Never met a naked mole rat before, so I don't know if that's what it is or not. But definitely NOT a skinny pig.

Trish -> I have never owned a Skinny Piggy before, but my very long haired cavy did have small round ears like this guy so I still think Jim is likely right. The ears could have also been cropped? Cheers!

Trish -> Agreed! But you have to admit there are some sick people out there. It would surprise me if someone cropped a skinny pigs ears just to get a weird photo and try to sell it to FOX or circulate it on the net.

People can be cruel and stupid enough to do that. I hope someone saved that poor thing, I hate the idea of it dying in the wild because it can't take care of itself. :(

I agree that the shape of the body and face definitely looks like a hairless guinea pig. The only thing I am skeptical about (and this could just be the quality of the photo) is that it appears to have four toes on its hind feet; which guinea pigs only have four. Like I said, it could just be the way the picture was taken.
