NASA Confirms Solar Storm Near 2012 - Coincides With End Of Mayan Calendar

The following interesting observation was made on the Slashdot site yesterday by an anonymous reader:

"This week researchers announced that a storm is coming — the most intense solar maximum in fifty years. The prediction comes from a team led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). "The next sunspot cycle will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one," she says. If correct, the years ahead could produce a burst of solar activity second only to the historic Solar Max of 1958.`Dikpati's forecast puts Solar Max at 2012. Hathaway believes it will arrive sooner, in 2010 or 2011.`Anyone familiar with the Mayan Calendar? December 21, 2012 (13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan Calendar) Coincidence?"

Many of our readers here on the Paranormal Blog are already familiar with the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in the year 2012, leading to much speculation about the end of civilization as we know it.

Is it a coincidence that this massive solar storm is predicted for roughly the same year? Who knows, but it is an interesting observation regardless.

Nah, I'm not buying it. The end of civilisation will come with no build up or fanfare... and most likely it will start with the words "Ooops" or "Hey, that's weird". ;)

A colleague and I did a fair bit of research into 2012 and the Mayan calendar last year for a radio project. I'll try and condense it into a Weird Wednesday sometime soon. :-)

That date also coincides with an astronomical event that occurs every 26000 years (based on certain readings of the calendar) - the earth in alignment with the dark rift of the milky way (basically the galactic equator.) and who knows if its true.. even if not if the worst it does is help you make the most of the next 5 years, why not? 12/21/2012 - Save the Date
