    Freaky Friday....Death Omens

Each Friday we will have a look at the stories and experiences that have been related to us over the years that are amongst our personal favourites. These will include Crypto, Ghosts, Hauntings, UFO's, and other strange events that may be considered Fortean, from in around the Toronto, Canada area .... and since they are from our own personal files will likely not be found elsewhere on the web .... enjoy!

    Virginia, USA - Death Omen

The following strange encounter was sent in by one of our readers, and they are hoping for some feedback from others who may have gone through something similar or have heard about another report like it.

"An event that took place in 1990 has had myself, and 2 friends curious for some years now.

August 1990, three of us went to Atlantic City. On the way home, my passenger side control arm snapped. I recovered from the skid and safely made it off the highway.

After hours spent waiting for a wrecker that never came, another friend came and got us, sometime after dark. We dropped off the first of our group in Fairfax, VA, then began the trip to our second stop.

We were on a divided highway in Manassas VA, no roadside lights, and tree lined. We noticed a female walking down the shoulder of the road. She was in a long black formal dress, kinda old style. She was weaving from side to side as she walked, so we figured we ought to stop and help.

A curious note is that despite the side to side movement, there was no vertical movement or bounce to her step. In the instant between her leaving our headlights, and when she should have been next to us, she was gone.

The next day, I was in a car wreck that had me in the emergency room for 5 hours, and the paramedics and firemen agreed that I should have been dead given the severity of the crash.

Two years later, in August, the guy that lived in Manassas, and was in the car when we saw the girl was killed in a car wreck.

Another two years following that, the driver was in a car wreck that left him legally dead for 2 minutes, and has walked with a cane ever since.

Nothing bad has happened to the guy we dropped off before we saw the girl.

I am curious as to whether there is some example in some folklore that would match this experience. It could be ruled as a sad coincidence, but there are enough details in this story that seem to resemble a kind of death omen, that I am curious as to if there is some tradition that would fit this episode."

Our thanks to the witness for sharing this report! It is our experience that apparitions or spirits of the dead are harmless, nor is this case a phantom hitchhiker. Any feedback or thoughts will be much appreciated.

Rose SleanbeckI have a nagging question I would like an answer to if anyone can help.
The night of the 16th of August, 2008 (my husband's birthday as it happened) We were driving home, (we live in Portland OR) it was around midnight and it was a full moon, the clouds were thick but not thick enough to obscure the moon. I glanced up at the clouds at what must have been exactly midnight and there was a specter of a skull in the clouds over the moon with the moon light showing through. It was as clear as any cloud form I've ever seen in my life and I watched it for about five miniutes before I looked at the time and noticed that it was right after midnight, I looked again after looking at the clock and the specter was gone, having not changed in shape from wind the whole time I watched it, suddinly no part of it was at all visable. I got a sinking feeling and another feeling I only get when I know something is an omen, though I never know what it is an omen of. I can only guess bassed on my feelings at the time and bassed on the feelings I got when I saw this omen I would have to say that it is something bad that is going to happen, like a death. The only information about omens I have comes from collective knowledge and my own experiences growing up. I tryed unsuccessfully to find out what an owmen like this might meen, and that's how I found this site. I would like to know if anyone is at all aquainted with this sort of thing and could tell me what it meens.
    Thanks,
    Rose

SueHere are some additional thoughts from one of our members:

These aren't really suggestions, more pondering... but----
Did the witness perhaps already have a sense of inner foreboding about something, or did viewing the skull spectre bring out these feelings? Sometimes, the image or symbol of a skull means more than the traditional view of death or doom - in some mystical traditions, the skull represents life, or even transformation/change.
However, if this witness generally associated a skull with death or foreboding, perhaps this is what it meant to her.

Not really much help but just thought I'd toss that out there.
