Weird Wednesday...With Chris Laursen

This week, historian Chris Laursen looks at two family photos taken in the past ten years that take the debate of survival after death even further.

Family photos inadvertently capture the uncanny
by Chris Laursen

It's amazing what you can capture in photos. Candid moments in life where the personality of those you love shines through. Posed portraiture where the subjects are obviously uncomfortable being photographed. They are all important records, a frozen split second forever treasured, evidence of our past. On rare occasion, unexplained things are caught in the frame.

On Sunday, May 16, 2004, brothers Christopher and Paul Petty went out to enjoy the sunshine in Sussex, England's Sheffield Park Gardens and took a few photos to remind them of the day. Something unexpected showed up in one of the digital photographs of Christopher sitting on the grass. There is a figure of a pale and shadowy woman behind Christopher, her head slightly bowed almost as if she were copying the subject's pose. Christopher and Paul say there was no one behind him at the time. No people. No statues. Nothing.

The story caught the interest of the BBC. In a story on the BBC's website published June 1, 2004, Christopher explained: "After much consideration I can only guess that there is either a photographic explanation for this, or that the shadow is in fact a ghost." Initially, BBC employees looking at the photo thought it was an elderly lady taking a stroll in the park, but they could not dismiss the fact that the brothers said there was no one else around at the time.

Over a year after the photo was published, Sussex resident John Bristow and his family contacted the BBC and wanted to find out if the photo was a hoax. He felt that the woman in the photo bore a striking resemblance to his mother, 87-year-old Florence Bristow, who died in the park on August 4, 2001. The BBC recollected the traumatic event at the park: "They hired a motorised buggy, intending to travel around the edge of the lake. Unfortunately, Florence suffered a heart attack and fell across her son who lost control of the buggy, which then plunged into the water. John's wife dived into the lake in an attempt to save her and although first reports suggested Florence had drowned, later tests showed that she had died before entering the water. Resuscitation attempts were tried at the lake side but to no effect."

Paul Petty verified that there was no one in that part of the park when he was taking photos of his brother. "I hope that there is a logical explanation for the figure in the photo," he wrote to the BBC, "and that the photo has not caused distress to the family of Mrs. Bristow."
Comments on the BBC website ranged from definite support to outright suspicion. Carolyn Petty, the brothers' sister, added a twist of simulacra to the mix, writing, "the face has another face within it which is even more spooky, it's to the lower right of the bigger face! I reckon it's got an animal type face to it - maybe a cat, tiger or lion." Such interpretations aside, it seems unmistakable that there is a woman standing behind Christopher that may or may not be the ghost of Florence Bristow.

Like many such strange photos, no solid conclusions can be made. Evidence is as fleeting as any other ghostly sighting. But it is harder to dismiss an even stranger and eerily similar photograph taken ten years ago and posted by about.com as one of the best ghost photos ever taken. The photo was taken on Sunday, August 17, 1997 by Denise Russell at an undisclosed location. You can clearly see a man standing behind Ms. Russell's grandmother in one of the pictures taken of her that day. The family did not discover the figure standing there until they were reviewing their photo album on Christmas Day, 2000. They were speechless to note the resemblance between the man standing behind their grandmother and their grandfather, who had died on August 14, 1984. There certainly is something uncanny about this photo, especially when compared to photos of Ms. Russell's grandfather.

Stephen Wagner, the editor of the paranormal section of about.com, put it very well. He wrote, "The accidental nature of these photos lends them credibility because the photographers didn't have an agenda - it wasn't their intention to capture a ghost image, it just happened, and they are just as surprised as anyone else to discover it."

Interestingly, both of these photographs feature figures, unseen by the photographers at the time, standing behind the subject of the photo. It is as if they were inadvertently caught in the snapshot. But how did they get there if they weren't there in the first place? The same situation was faced by photographers of other famed ghost photos, including the photograph of a deceased woman in the back of a car (1959), the Tulip Staircase photographed by Canadian tourists in Greenwich, England (1966), the Ghost Research Society's Bachelor's Grove Cemetery female apparition in Chicago (1991), and the apparition of a girl in the town hall fire in Shropshire, England (1995). In these examples, nothing unusual was seen at the time the photos were taken.

There are no doubt hundreds or thousands of equally inexplicable photographs in family collections - photographs that could no doubt further survival after death and paranormal research. But since many of these photographs may contain an image of a loved one, it is likely the family would prefer not to share it publicly. Although controversial, the photos released by Christopher and Paul Petty and Denise Russell are excellent insights into how photos can give us possible glimpses into the world of those who have passed over. Such photos can be submitted for confidential analysis by reputable research organizations such as PSICAN, the American or British Society for Psychical Research, and so on.

This is an absolutely awesome story and the photographs are great.

I may be crazy (and probably am) and maybe I only see it because someone suggest it but it does look like there may be another shape in the bushes or tree or whatever it is. But to me it doesn't look like a big cat, it looks more like a wolf face.

I'm definitely shivery now, and probably have an overactive imagination.

Regardless, great post!

This guy was on Unexplained Mysteries talking about his photos.

There was some talk about other members going to the park to ensure there were no statues or other...

One thing bugs me... to me, the figure does not necessarily look like the lady who was reported to have died in the park. In fact, the figure looks like a man to me.

Really eerie photos.

I guess it's just me but I don't really see the animal face. Just suggestion, but it could be a term that the paranormal investigators on TV show Ghost Hunters use. They call it matrixing where like, in this example, the leaves are possibly arranged in such a way that it looks like a face of an animal but it isn't.

Of course, I could be wrong.

That first photo, it's a bright sunny day. It seems to me that the person in the background should be lighter. There is like a greyness or blackness to it.

The second set of photos is my favorite ghost photo ever and I think it's one of the best examples paranormal evidence.

The first is very creepy to.

Hey everyone - Thanks for your wonderful comments so far - you've made my day!

Faith and Andrea -> I will respond further to your comments later in the day - just getting busy here at my workplace, and I have a lot to say on it.

Heather -> The National Trust (who runs the park) confirmed there are no statues in the park. I agree that it is uncertain that the figure can be correlated with Mrs. Bristow, but her unfortunate death in the park is an eerie coincidence at the very least. The family's reaction (thinking someone was hoaxing them) suggests that they truly believe it was their mother in the picture.

Trowbridge -> I completely agree that the shadowy look of the figure in the first photo is quite intriguing considering the lighting. It mystifies me a bit. If it were an actual person just walking by, there would have to be quite a shadow cast over her to create such lighting and colour values, yet her hair is lit up and the light on her hair matches the light cast on the back of Christopher Petty's head.

The second one makes more sense lighting-wise since Denise Russell's grandmother would be sitting in the shade and the figure behind her is blown out a bit (is brighter) because he would be standing in the bright sunlight. He matches the background. It's also occurred to me that it's almost like he is coming out of her head, as if she were thinking of him.

Rand -> I hope that this article encourages other people to submit their uncanny family photos! Maybe we'll find some more to share publicly along the way.

Have a weird Wednesday, everyone!
Chris

The second one of the Russell's... There is a pathway behind where she is sitting. It IS possible that someone was walking by. You don't always necessarily remember that when taking photos, especially if you are not an experienced photographer.

I agree that there is a resemblance to Mrs. Russel's late husband, but again, not enough to be conclusive.

Hi Heather -> Thanks so much for your further comments. I agree with you that firm conclusions are unlikely with these photos. There are many logical points that can be made to explain what is happening in these photos. But there are just as many points (given eyewitness testimony) to support these these are photos of people who were not visible at the time, in the Russell case, someone known to the family. (Inconclusiveness: such is the nature with such inexplicable things.)

In my opinion, I find the Russell family's picture especially intriguing because the person (who looks very much like the deceased grandfather) standing behind their grandmother seems to be intently standing there and staring at the grandmother and/or photographer. I think it would be unusual for a stranger to do that and not be noticed. (Of course it is possible no one noticed, but I suspect it's unlikely in this case.) These are not the first cases where such figures have inexplicably shown up in photos, and given the circumstances, I think they all add up to build a case that these might be related to survival after death or psychical abilities, and should be entered into the important category: "possibilities." Add to these two photos the one from 1959 of the deceased mother sitting in the back of the car after her grave was visited, and it becomes more intriguing (you can find that 1959 photo, by the way, simply by typing in famous ghost photos into a search engine - shouldn't be too hard to find. It's on about.com's paranormal photos page too.)

Faith & Andrea -> Simulacra often seems to go hand-in-hand with photos with allegedly paranormal elements. As you likely know, the vast majority of photos people claim to have supernatural things in them are quite abstract and open to personal interpretation (e.g. shadows, strange lighting, unusual shapes, reflections). I think this relates very much to simulacra. Because of that, the Fortean Times (in particular) dedicates a section in each issue to photos with simulacra that has obviously natural explanations, but coincidental imagery that reminds us of things related to beliefs or perception (e.g. the root that looks like Jesus, a tree branch that looks like an Islamic devotee praying, the face in the smoke from the World Trade Centers).

I've just finished reading Christine Wicker's book "Not In Kansas Anymore" which is about magical culture in North America. She doesn't speak on simulacra, but she does talk about magical perception, which I think is an important part of both of your comments. Many people simply see things others don't, for example they see signs in everyday things pertaining to their lives in things that others would not notice, e.g. numbers, colours, random incidents, etc. Maybe simulacra goes with that. If you see a shape in the leaves, the clouds, in the ground, in the rocks, does it have a magical quality to you? Does it mean something special?

Maybe what the Ghost Hunters called matrixing is merely a random coincidence - one in which some people will see something, and others won't.

In any case, I would never claim someone to be wrong when they say they see simulacra - it says something about how the wonderful way in which they perceive the world. :-)

cheers,
Chris

Very Interesting! First Pic! I saw a ghost that I thought was a person walking on the road until he looked at me, he also had that gray paper mache look. He looked dry, like if I put pressure on his arm I might crush it and his eyes were black and hollow. Boo! hahaha:) but yes.. it must be a kind of formation. I'm surprised that there is such detail when the picture of the face is blown up! very surpirsed!
Second pic; The trees are alive with faces on the left and larger warrior types on the left that look like they are emerging out of the trees.
Lots of energy around there! Britian has so many old and magical sites. It doesn't surprise me, at all :)

Heather, On UM, wasn't the other big thing about the first picture is that it has only been seen cropped??? and when asked to see the full picture, it has never been produced???? I think that was the whole thing in UM about that, and the guy IN the picture came on to verify but also did not produce the full picture.

Heather & Penn - I'd love to see that interview! Unexplained Mysteries vs. Unsolved Mysteries? Searched around youtube.com and googled to no avail, though I found some cool vintage Unsolved Mysteries clips. Anyone know if the interview you've referred to is posted online anywhere?

I would hope the BBC would have asked to see the full-sized picture to verify it before doing a feature story on it that ended up upsetting one family (who wondered if THEY were being hoaxed). According to their article, the BBC did their own analysis of the pic. If someone out there challenged it as a hoax, you'd think BBC would follow up. I can, however, understand that the BBC would publish a cropped version on their website for presentation purposes.

Admitting this photo as paranormal evidence is even trickier because it's a digital photo. Digital = easily doctored.

Thank you for the comment, Aura6901.

Thanks to Penn, I have checked out some recent messages posted by a user who says he his Chris Petty on a message board called Unexplained Mysteries. On it, Paul Petty posted the original photo of Chris with the figure behind him. The photo is virtually the same as the one posted by the BBC; they ended up cropping out the top of the picture, which was a portrait of Chris taken while the brothers were waiting for family in the park in the mid-afternoon that day.

Chris Petty also posted messages responding to questions on that message board that expand a bit on what the BBC reported. He wrote: "To be honest, I'm not bothered whether the photo is considered genuine or fake, as I do not seek to gain anything from it. I know for certain that it isn`t manufactured and, given the number of hoaxes that have been done in the past, can understand the scepticism."

He added: "There was nothing unusual about my mood at the time, I was just sitting on the grass and enjoying the sunshine.

"I don't remember a strange atmosphere, scent, or feeling at the time, and only learned of the shadowy figure a month or so later when the picture was e-mailed to me, and knew nothing of the 2001 tragedy until the BBC ran the follow-up story."

I wrote him a message, and invited him to read this column and comment if he wished. Hope that adds a bit more info to the mix. Thanks again to Penn! :-)

Hi, I posted the original photo on my flickr account as above. You can view this in various size formats, and this should help prove it was not doctored, but I am happy to email a copy of the original if it will help. Regards, Paul Petty
