Predictions 2007

It's that time of year again! Time to usher out the old and ring in the new.

With the dawning of the new year Matthew and I like to put forward our own predictions in the following categories: WORLD EVENTS, CANADIAN EVENTS (for those in Canada), ENTERTAINMENT, DEATHS, SPORTS, PARANORMAL/PARAPSYCHOLOGICAL. We make no claims to being psychic at all. At best these are a collection of guesses, and we invite you dear reader to play along. In the commentary section leave us your own predictions for 2007. Late in the year or early 2008 we will reexamine these predictions and see how well we might have done.

We have been playing this game with our members on the PSICAN message forums for a few years now and occasionally with surprising results!

So without further ado here is what Matthew and Sue predict is in store for 2007.

Matthew's Predictions:

WORLD EVENTS

Afghanistan situation - No change. There will be some "much vaunted" construction projects, but things will continue SSDD.

Iraq situation - Loads of talk, no change... the country will devolve into civil war... but "apparently" at the slow rate it's going now.

Sadam's execution doesn't mean a damn to anyone but a handful or Iraqis and the current US government. Nothing will come of it positive or negative.

Ethiopia fights a pitched and bloody war with the Muslim extremists in Somalia... things get MUCH worse.

Israel still doesn't acknowledge it's nuclear weapons... BUT... another "slip of the tongue" happens and they release a statement about what they'd DO if they DID have nuclear weapons... which mostly causes amusement and the mandatory condemnations without real substance.

Hezbollah becomes more moderate in general hopes of rebuilding a "normal" way of life. Talks will yield progress.

Naysayers of global warming start eating their words publicly... (Releasing statements that SEEM to show that they "acknowledged it all along"... Think CSICOP/CFI - now Crime Scene Investigations - and their views on Panspermia a while back and today.)

There will be more blogs than websites on the web numerically.

Iran will not detonate a nuclear bomb... yet. (Watch 'em in 2008.. This will also signal the fall of the current government... but it will be a reasonably peaceful ousture.)

An earthquake will decimate a lot Iran's outter provinces causing an outpouring of global aid... that will mean nothing to the current Iranian political regime... granted, they'll be gone (by elections) to moderates within three years.

Another tsunami will hit... the Philippines will get the brunt of it.

Flanders will start the process of separation from Belgium... they will be as succesful as Quebec has been.

California, Washington, and Southern BC is in for some HORRIBLE whacky weather.

India and Pakistan strengthen ties diplomatically and economically... this throws the spanner in the works with certain terrorist organisations... some of whom will be en route to Africa to help with efforts there.

A terrorist "event" will happen in either Holland or France... in response to the Mohammed "cartoons".

There will be TWO major, almost world-wide newsworthy child abductions/missing kids in the US... don't know why, but these two cases will send a collective "shiver" through almost the whole planet.

More Bush political appointees will fall... hard. (Major scandals.) One of them will commit suicide.

China will continue it's slow turn into a free market... but not improve the situation with their human rights record. China, because of those turns, become the major help in quelling issues in Korea and start an even more massive trade agreement with Japan and America that makes the news.

China will also REALLY start to become the world's auto-manufacturing giant... leaving "The Big Two" in the states scrambling... even in 2007, they will be very (publicly) worried and start working on things like, "Our cars are FAR more environmentally friendly" type things.

There will be TWO very large, heavy-loss of lifes air disasters... one in the Pacific, one over Europe.

There will be about the same amount of "false-start" terrorist warnings with more things like "No Toothpaste on Airplanes" type things... but no real action except those mentioned in either France or Holland.

Slowly but surely, more of the middle-East will become more "Pro-American"... and more of South America will become "Anti-American".

American "housing bubble" bursts... but only in certain states.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will be the Democratic ticket for the next elections... most assume that although it will be "President Clinton" again, it should be the other way around. Sadly, loons will target Obama for ridiculous reasons and his life will be in GREAT jeopardy. He'll be okay, though.

There will be another "school attack"... I'm not sure where... either America or in Western Europe... it will be very bloody and very cruel. It will be an adult whack-job again.

Dubai becomes an even bigger genuine travel destination... and starts becoming an even more important place in modern politics and whatnot than New York, London, or Paris.

CANADIAN EVENTS (for those in Canada)

Same sex marriage laws will remain unchanged.

The Tory's will survive another year.

The provincial Liberals will gain even more popularity.

Horrid fires in Northern Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and parts of Quebec.

"Copy-cat" serial killer (copying the Ipswich killer from England) will start-up but won't last in one of the three "biggie" cities... Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver.

Tim Horton's stock flattens.

Quebec ALMOST manages to field a "World Hockey Team"... but the officials shoot it down in favour of one Canadian team.

Separatism in Quebec will fade further... in favour of more "noise" about "special status" within Canada.

Toronto will be on the verge of bankruptcy by year's end.

Violent crime will continue to decline.

Canadian housing bubble remains unchanged.

The economy doesn't budge from it's current position.... mild growth.

Justin Trudeau still remains "smilingly non-comittal" to any leadership thoughts... but ends up being (more or less) a pivotal player in the federal Liberals.

Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and The Maritimes will end up with a VERY cold winter... that will last no more than three weeks. (Oh, it'll be "cold" and there will be a LOT of snow... but the REAL winter will only last a VERY short time... and be brutal.)

ENTERTAINMENT

K-Fed will be far more "appetizing" to the general audience than Britney will be after a time. His "antics" and "non-celebrity" will be better than her stupidity.

Katey and Tom will still be married... and Tom will ACTUALLY do a good movie that will do well in theatres.

Oprah's new prime-time shows will tank after initially good ratings.

Mel Gibson's career is NOT QUITE over... but regardless of how well his latest film does, it's doing a death rattle... and his acting career is shot.

Andy Dick (of all people) will do well this year.

Rosie will continue to try and "push the envelope"... and will do EXTREMELY well on "The View"... but WILL end up spending 50% of the time pushing, and 50% of the time apologizing. I believe the "stuff" between her and the "Donald" is a work... ratings for Trump's appearance on "The View" will be astronomical. She will, however, this year open-mouth-and-insert-foot either politically or religiously (or both) and end up with a legitimate death-threat.

"Bon Cop - Bad Cop II"... and it will either be FAR more impressive than the first one... or unbelievably bad... no middle ground.

The new Star Trek film starts... even Trekkies don't care.

What's left of the theatre "boom" in Toronto ends by year's end... leaving only the "staples" in the theatres (mostly rotating things at The Royal Alex and others...) The Mirvishes take a bit of a bath because of it.

Brian May (guitarist from Queen) manages to finish his Phd in Astrophysics ahead of schedule. (Think this is a joke? It isn't...)

There will be a NASTY club fire that will take a lot of lives in either New York or Los Angeles and involve (but not kill) some "A" and "B" list celebs.

Satellite radio loses some steam... listeners/subscribers will decline by year's end.

The "Big Buzz" movie this Summer, "Transformers", will suck... and I will weep. It will still generate a TONNE of money though.

Lindsay Lohan "jailed" for a couple of days for some stupidity.

Sooner than later, no one will give a good damn about Paris Hilton and by year's end, she'll have all but dropped off the radar.

Stephen King will be VERY ill this year.

...so will Anne Rice.

...so will Carol Burnett.

...so will Mick Jagger.

...so will Burt Reynolds.

DEATHS

Mel Brooks
Liz Taylor
Paul McCartney
Jimmy Carter
Henry Kissinger
Luciano Pavarotti
Ed Mirvish
Mickey Rooney
Ray Bradbury
Larry Hagman
Jerry Lewis
Jerry Lee Lewis

Stompin' Tom Connors
James Moseley

Kate Moss
One of the Olsen Twins
Robert Wagner
Billy Graham
Jerry Reed
Lilly Tomlin

Leonard Cohen
Joe Nickel or Paul Kurtz

SPORTS

Leafs don't make the playoffs... and their draft picks will suck. Sundin will stay. It'll be Ottawa against Carolina... Ottawa wins.

Argunots will not make the Grey Cup... but will REALLY do amazing "public service work" (even moreso than last year) and gain a stellar reputation in the city. Call it a long shot, BC vs. Hamilton with BC taking it.

Hawks and Colts in the Superbowl. Colts take it. Seahawks "stand out".

The Jay's will do well... but won't show up in the finals. Los Angeles gets the World Series for 2007.

Man U vs. West Ham... Man U just for a change. Arsenal SHOULD do better... but chokes.

TFC (Toronto Football Club) breaks the bank and hires Iain Dowie (late of Crystal Palace now with Charlton Athletic) to manage the team... his "personality" actually catches on and the team and league do well in Toronto.

PARANORMAL/PARAPSYCHOLOGICAL

SSDD...

Less "dreck" as interest in ghosts and hauntings wanes... The "orb hunters" and "cemetery stompers" start becoming an endangered species.

More hoax video and film thanks to YouTube and it's competitors detracts from better studies.

Sylvia Browne will make a HUGE and unforgivable blunder... and her "fame" will slide monumentally.

CSICOP/CFI (now Crime Scene Investigations) will lose a lot of momentum and members when the secular-humanist agenda becomes more public. They will be spending most of their time in "damage-control/spin doctoring" and ignoring most other things.

A historic mansion/palatial home in England really starts "cranking up the heat" with it's reports of phenomena... intriguing us all.

There will be a quiet, and more-or-less ridiculed and mocked (and not properly disputed) finding in psychical studies that, to the trained eye, will really blow the lid off the studies... and it will be done by a "respected" University... but due to the bluster, it will never really get the attention it will deserve. People like us, however, will realise it's significance and TRY to get people interested... and we will fail... but in the long run, it'll be important.

UFO reports increase dramatically in North America and Asia... including a large-sized public sighting.

Abductee reports also increase dramatically... and someone in prominence will risk their reputation by "eluding" to a possible experience they have had.

Crypto, sadly, will be in a holding pattern. Nothing terribly new, but no major changes.

Discouraged by years of lost hopes and failure, I give up on the bus.
