Does animal consciousness survive bodily death?

Last month I wrote about the loss of our Carlito under the heading of "A Passing Of A Life" and in tribute to his life I included an article that I had penned years before entitled Animal Apparitions. Over the years I have received much positive feedback from those who have loved and lost a furry companion in regards to that article and how they too have received confirmation that their beloved animals do go on ......

A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by a nice lady from Texas USA by the name of Dusty Rainbolt. Dusty is the author of an upcoming book (March 2007) about "ghost cats." She requested a phone-in interview with me in regards to this most fascinating topic and I was happy to oblige.

During the course of that interview I decided to ask her why her interest in writing on this subject, and she related the following:

Dusty is involved with a cat rescue shelter in her home town. Often cats and kittens end living in her home while waiting to be adopted. She told me of a kitten she had fostered that was born sickly and lived only just 8 months, but during that time they developed a strong bond. After the kitten's passing she received an epiphany when this kitten returned to her. Most often by leaving indents where she slept in Dusty's bed. Mrs. Rainbolt is married to a professional scientist, and has a strong leaning towards science herself. She confided in me that prior to this she never gave the paranormal a second thought. However, with her experiences combined with exhaustive research she is now convinced that animal consciousness does survive physical death.

Last week while surfing through blogs I came across The Spicy Cauldron and a new friend by the name of Andy. Andy has recently lost his beloved companion of 19 years. To read through Andy's memorial for Dolly is to gain an understanding of the deep love and affection that can occur when human and animal bond so strongly. And it is very touching!

I am very happy to report that within a week of Dolly's passing Andy and his spouse have also received confirmation that Dolly's spirit survives. You may read about it and view Andy's photos by clicking here.

I understand that many of you might be shaking your head at all of this.

However, for the people that are touched by the soul of an animal this can be a very powerful, spiritually enriching life experience that alters their own views on death and perhaps more importantly life and how we live it.

    Cheers!
    Sue

KevinAnimals most certainly are reunited with us in the afterlife. Many books about Near Death Experiences recount stories of people meeting up with their pets after death.
Any creature that can give love is rewardedy God. I certainly believe that.

AndyWhat a brilliant entry on what is truly a fascinating subject. And thank you for the reference.

I think those who do shake their heads are a tad judgemental and scornful and there's enough of that around. Science should be about investigation, curiosity, not closed minds but of course the human race has a long history of condemning new ideas and the unknown. Why mainstream science chains itself to the creed that there cannot be anything beyond death is a mystery to me.

Like the author who got in touch with you, I have had an epiphany following my feline friend's death as outlined in my entry 'Love and water' in which I found spending time by the sea helped me formulate a sense for myself of what goes on after death in terms of our energies returning to source. It's not provable, it's not robust enough in anything approaching scientific terms to be an arguable theory but it works for me and, I hope, others who have lost humans or animals who might come across it. And yes, I've had my proof as you indicate above - with photos of the impressions made on the bedclothes.

Do please let the author know about the entries I've written recently and if she wants to contact me, I am more than happy to assist her book research by answering any questions. If she wants to use any quotes from what I've written, that would be fine too so long as I'm credited and, of course, get to know when the book becomes available because I really want to buy and read it! x
