Statistically speaking cemeteries are not very likely to be haunted. Spirits seem to haunt where they lived, worked and/or played, not where their remains are buried. The few reports we do have from cemeteries are usually that of a deceased caretaker or a regular visitor, perhaps returning to mourn?????
Therefore my visits to cemeteries rarely have anything to do with the "hobby" and are based almost completely on my love of them as beautiful, peaceful and inspiring places to visit. I enjoy reading the markers and learning perhaps a bit about the history of a given location through the people who are buried in the local cemeteries.
Occasionally I receive emails or messages in regards to reportedly haunted cemeteries, and today a thread was started on our PSICAN forum on this subject. I recounted an interesting story, but refused to divulge it's location (beyond the city the graveyard was located in) when asked by a fellow poster to do so. My reason for not posting the name or location are in part as follows:
A few years ago I investigated as part of the "hobby" a wonderful, old cemetery with another group and our findings were published on the web. I was very excited to be a part of this investigation as it included two of my interests! However, shortly after we published our reports the cemetery was vandalized. I felt terrible, particularly because the vandals (unknown to us) were would-be ghost hunters.
Two months ago, the cemetery where my father is buried was vandalized and over 200 headstones were over turned many smashed beyond repair. This caused our family much grief and it was like having my heart broken all over again.
Cemeteries are easy pickings for thrill seekers and vandals. And, I don't want to add to their vulnerability by publishing ghost reports that involve them.
Can you imagine how someone would feel if they came to mourn a loved one and found a group of people with EMF detectors or worse Ouija boards sitting around their grave! It happens! I've seen web pages where family plots are clearly shown! To me this is disrespectful.
I do not expect everyone to think like me (there are cemeteries listed on our websites - so this is just a personal thing) nor as a moderator do I stop anyone from listing them on our forums. I just won't do it.
Hopefully my fellow message board denizens will understand my reasoning and respect it.
